When building a new WordPress website, no matter what theme you use, you should ALWAYS create a child theme. The child theme is where you add all your customizations for the theme, among other things. If you don’t have a child theme, have made changes to your theme’s code, and then choose to update your theme to the latest version, you will lose all your changes and customizations. Here is a guide to creating a child theme specifically for the Divi theme, but your steps are all the same for any child theme accept for the name of the parent theme in your functions.php file.
